Electoral district of Elder

Elder is an electoral district of the House of Assembly in the Australian state of South Australia. It is named after nineteenth-century businessman and philanthropist Thomas Elder. Elder is a 15.7 km² urban electorate in Adelaide's south-west, taking in the suburbs of Ascot Park, Clovelly Park, Marion, Melrose Park, Mitchell Park and Park Holme, and parts of Colonel Light Gardens, Daw Park, Edwardstown, Oaklands Park, Plympton Park, South Plympton and Warradale.
Elder was created as a marginal Labor electorate at the 1991 electoral redistribution taking suburbs in from much of the abolished Walsh and also from the redistributed Mitchell. Elder won by Liberal David Wade on a 8.0 percent swing amidst the landslide Liberal victory at the 1993 election. Wade only lasted one term, as while he faced a smaller than average swing at the 1997 election of 6.1 percent, he only had a margin of 3.4 percent, and was easily defeated by Labor candidate Patrick Conlon. Conlon had little difficulty being re-elected at the 2002 election and was a senior minister in the Rann government. A redistribution prior to the 2014 election saw Labor's margin significantly reduced from 3.6 percent to 2.0 percent. Conlon resigned from parliament at the 2014 election however Elder was retained by Labor's Annabel Digance.
